2018 Performance - JEFF HAYNES

UNITED BY NATURE WITH JEFF HAYNES & FRIENDS

Annual Performance - September 29, 2018

Manitoga’s 2018 Annual Performance honors the 50th anniversary of Wright’s Summer in the Parks – a program he launched with the National Park Service to invite the Washington D.C. community into the city’s parks and green spaces through multi genre music and dance, play, poetry, and recreation. The year was 1968. Across the country, people demonstrated against war and threats to civil liberties. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Robert F. Kennedy were assassinated. Olympic medalists raised gloved fists during the national anthem protesting racial discrimination. Hey Jude was released in the United States, and Hair opened on Broadway. Yale University voted to admit women after 267 years. Richard Nixon won the presidency. Russel Wright believed then in the power of nature to unite and to heal. With a designer’s vision and naturalist’s heart, he created Manitoga – a place of great spirit, inspiration, and beauty.
