The weather forecast is calling for excessive / extreme heat, with temperatures in the 100s and a heat index exceeding 105-110°F. Guests who are vulnerable to heat should avoid visiting during this time. Please take precautions to remain safe and avoid heat-related illness or injury.
TOUR UPDATES
Tours have been cancelled for Thursday, July 2nd, when the heat will be at its peak
Tours on Friday, July 3rd and Saturday, July 4th are still on as scheduled; Time in the Landscape will be abbreviated, and water stations will be available at check-in and during the tour
Registered tour guests will receive an email with pertinent details

hiking the trails
If you plan to visit / hike during the heat wave, please take precautions for your safety:
Wear loose-fitting and light-colored clothing
Stay hydrated; Bring a sufficient amount of cool drinking water to carry, and sip it often
Hats, sunglasses, sunblock and insect repellent are strongly recommended
Bring a handkerchief or small towel, which can be soaked in a stream and used to cool off
Stay in the shade and avoid direct sunlight, especially mid-day to mid-afternoon
Be familiar with the signs of heat exhaustion / heat stroke:
Dizziness, confusion, nausea, headache, muscle cramps / spasms, weakness, rapid or weak pulse, intense thirst
Sign in at the Guide House with your name and the date so our staff knows you’re on the trails
Take a paper map from the trail kiosk, which outlines each trail and provides crucial information about distance, elevation and estimated duration
Alert someone you know to your plans, including location, which trail you intend to take, and your timing
